Services
Windy City Fencing was founded in 2002 by three U.S. Modern Pentathletes, Josh Holmstrom, Barry Matchett, and Jeff Ulmer, each with extensive fencing experience and committed to introducing fencing to youth in Chicago, where fencing was relatively unknown.
Josh, Barry, and Jeff dedicated their free time to building and expanding Windy City Fencing, coaching all of the classes, and growing the program to the point where fencers were competing in regional and national tournaments.
In 2004, they hired Bulgarian Olympian (Sydney 2000) Tsanko Hantov as a full-time coach.
Registration for all fencing classes is through our partner, the Menomonee Club for Boys and Girls.
New sessions usually begin in September, November, March/April, and June.
Windy City Fencing classes are held at the Windy City Fencing Clubhouse at the Menomonee Club's Drucker Center, 1535 N. Dayton Street in the Lincoln Park area of Chicago, an easy walk from the CTA North and Clybourn Station on the Red Line.
Fencers who want to advance more quickly often supplement group lessons with private one-on-one lessons.
Classes will provide a great introduction to fencing and a forum for more advanced training.
We make the class fun as well as educational.
We teach general fitness using Fencing specific activities and games.
Our goal is to inspire them to make good choices and develop a healthy attitude towards sports, training and discipline.
We continue to challenge the students as they progress through the program.
The program will include bouting and other events that will increase the students preparedness for continuing the sport for life.
Want to train hard, compete locally, nationally, and internationally, and/or advance more rapidly with your fencing than one practice a week allows?
Windy City Fencing offers three different teams for various age groups and skill levels.
Taught by Tsanko Hantov and Windy City Fencing.
Fencers must be approved by Coach Tsanko to join Fencing teams.
All team members are expected to provide their own equipment.
Gold Team members are typically high-school-aged fencers or older with some experience, who are preparing to compete in local, regional, or national tournaments.
Fencers will spend the time playing games and learning footwork, blade technique, tactics, and the principles of competitive fencing.
Kids should come dressed to work hard in loose clothing (no denim jeans),l ong athletic pants and tennis shoes.
All fencing equipment is provided.
During the camp day, kids will have time for a quick snack, so please prepare a small snack bag!
Camp will be from 12:00 to 3:00, followed by two hours off and open floor/lessons evening practices.
The price for the camp is $250 for WC Fencers and $400 for guests.
