Rain City Fencing Center was founded by Barbara Todd Heiner, Steve Colton and Greg Jones. Since then we have taught thousands of students to fence through our classes, summer camps and school programs. Our competitive program has also grown, with many Rain City fencers competing on the local, national, and - occasionally - international levels. Rain City is now recognized as the premier junior fencing program in Washington State.
In our new facility, we are able to offer more opportunities for kids and adults to learn to fence. By sharing our expertise as well as our love for this sport, we hope to help each fencer reach their goals. While we will continue to focus our efforts on training junior and youth fencers to succeed at the national level, we want to see fencers of all ages and ability levels reach their potential.

Services
Our Beginning class is a one-month introduction to the sport of fencing.
We start with stance and footwork, weapon safety, and basic technique.
By the end of the month, you'll have learned some simple tactics and get to spar with the other students.
Our Beginning classes teach foil fencing.
All of our weekday classes meet twice a week.
After completing one month of the Beginning class, you can move to the Continuing class in the same weapon.
The Beginning Kids and Beginning Junior classes may switch days again later in the season.

Our classes are divided into three age ranges: Kids, Juniors, and Adults.
Our age ranges are general guidelines based on our experience.
Occasionally, coaches may recommend a different class for some students based on their size and/or maturity level.
We design our kids classes for ages 8-11.
In addition to teaching fencing techniques, tactics, and safety, we keep things fun with games for exercise, agility, and focus.
Generally, kids younger than 8 do not have the fine motor skills to perform precise motions with a foil, or the attention span to follow safety rules concerning weapons.

The sport of fencing is a uniquely classic sport.
It has history, drama, romance, style, art, plus all the advantages of an active physically demanding sport.
Mentally it is mind consuming, allowing not a moment's break.
Fencing is also fast and athletic, a far cry from the choreographed bouts you see on film or on the stage.
Instead of swinging from a chandelier or leaping from balconies, you will see two fencers performing an intense dance on a six foot-by-40 foot strip.
The movement is so fast the touches are scored electrically - more like Star Wars than Errol Flynn.

Clean athletic shoes with non-marking soles are required.
Shoes should lace or fasten securely.
Sandals, winter boots, and slip-on style "athletic" shoes don't provide enough support or traction for fencing.
After you've taken classes for a couple of months and you know you would like to continue fencing, it's time to start thinking about buying your own equipment.
Having your own jacket, mask and glove means you know it will fit.
And using the same weapon every time will help improve your technique as you get used to the feel of your blade.

Rain City Fencing Center's programs provide the training students need to progress from the beginner level to national competition and beyond.
Group classes, individual lessons, open practice times, and cross-training sessions are all important parts of a fencer's training.
Beginning fencers usually start with group classes.
The group setting allows kids and teenagers to interact in a fun setting while they learn about the sport.
Group classes also provide a wide variety of different practice partners to learn and spar with.
