Services
Founded in 1991, the Virginia Academy of Fencing (VAF) is the World's Largest Fencing School.
As a Washington, D.C. metropolitan area institution for the past 30 years, VAF has introduced fencing to thousands of adults and children in our state-of-the-art 13,000 square foot fencing facility, conveniently located right off of the Capital Beltway.
VAF is open 7 days a week for classes and training.
Teaching fencing is only one part of our overall philosophy.
Respect, honor, good sportsmanship, and manners are an integral part of our disciplined approach to achieving athletic and personal growth.
For new students, VAF offers classes & camps in Olympic Sport and Historical Swordsmanship.
They are designed to introduce students to the world of fencing with a comprehensive but moderately paced approach.
Students will acquire the fundamentals of fencing footwork, handwork, strategy formulation, etiquette, rules, and terminology.
By the end of the course, students will be able to fence and referee bouts with each other.
Known as the physical game of chess, Olympic sport fencing provides a tremendous physical and mental workout for students of all ages and athletic abilities.
The Olympic Sport fencing program includes group classes and private lessons in foil, sabre, and epee.
Classes are offered in five different levels, allowing you to take classes with fencers who have similar skills and goals.
For those new to fencing, VAF offers introductory and preparatory classes year-round, for both youth and adults.
After completing the preparatory classes, students may be eligible for VAF Membership and proceed to the Intermediate level in their weapon of choice.
Foil fencing classes explore proper footwork, attack, and defense actions, and the ability to analyze opponents.
The sword and combat arts that were practiced on battlefields and dueling grounds of the Middle Ages and Renaissance are the roots of modern day fencing.
These arts are known as Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA).
VAF is only one of a handful of schools in North America to offer systematic instruction in HEMA, with classes offered at all levels from beginners to advanced, recreational and competitive.
Students must be at least 8 years old to begin.
This two handed, knightly weapon of the 14th-15th centuries was a symbol of authority, power, and honor in the Middle Ages.
For those without any fencing experience, six group classes or private lessons are taken in a chosen discipline: Olympic Sport or Historical Swordsmanship.
Summer, spring and winter camps are offered for youth participants as well.
The next level is a more intensive approach that refines the fundamentals of our Introductory class.
The goal is to prepare students for the Intermediate level where they may fence other students with less direct close supervision.
New techniques designed to rapidly improve knowledge of the basics are introduced in the next 6 classes.
